Holland in mid-March

The Smith girls leave tomorrow (3/20) to go back to Virginia for JA's college tour. Before leaving, We took some pictures from our windows and in Clingendael Park near us to give you an idea of Spring. It's also for us to see what has changed when we return. The pictures are small here so the blog wouldn't be so big. You can see the pictures better by clicking onto the picture to bring it up full in your screen. Take the back arrow to get back to the blog.

First, the geese are back. They are noisy things. Very territorial. They buddy up to gang up on each other.

Everywhere you look, there are daffodils. Not single ones, clumps of them. Along the street, along the highway, sprouting up all over the park. Yellow trumpets of the Spring.

Canals and lakes run throughout the park. You can find ducks, water chickens, swans and other birds large and small on the paths in and out of the water. The pigeons are really fat.

The swans. They are a noisy bunch. I never saw one with a neck craned as long as this one. I saw the "ugly duckling" variety, the ones that will one day soon grow beautiful white feathers.

As any municipality knows, when spring comes, out comes construction with the roads blocked. In the residential area, it becomes more of a challenge to find places to park when they are ripping up the cobblestones in front of a row of homes. Here they dig up cobblestone which is embedded in sand. Laying them is faster and cleaner smelling then paving.

Hopefully you can see the long view of the street. The street is down to the sand. There are piles of cobblestone waiting to be picked up and dumped in the truck to be hauled away. The vehicles are at the far end. New cobblestone will be laid and maybe a speed bump or two installed. Fortunately, this street is two long blocks away from us. We are fortunate to have a driveway to park our car in.

Here are two views from our windows.

This first one is from our kitchen window looking out onto the balcony. The flowers in the foreground are in planter boxes. They've been out all winter and started blooming a week or so ago. Trees are in the back garden.

This picture is from our front window looking out toward the eastern end of Clingendael Park. We are very blessed to have so many large windows in this house. They let in lots of sunlight and beauty from the outdoors.

We'll show you how things change over the weeks.
